Pain around the eyes is one of the more easily recognized severe sinus infection symptoms. The pain is usually an indicator of possibly a more serious problem. Increasing severity of the headache may result in more serious symptoms such as swollen eyes and difficulty in eye movement, which usually signifies that the eyes have also contracted the infection.

Common severe sinus infections to look out for include dilated pupils, high fever and continual coughing. It must be remembered that the symptoms around the sinus cavities may or may not actually be sinusitis-related. The front teeth may be numbed due to the nasal pressure and headache. The sinus problem may also cause dizziness, making the patient feel nausea. The ears and skull’s base may also be affected with pain. Eating may also make the severe sinus infection symptoms worse.

Medical practitioners base their diagnosis of sinus infection on the symptoms and results of x-rays, CT or MRI scans or physical examination. Symptoms of the flu and common cold are similar to severe sinus infection symptoms. Severe infection may be caused by an excess of harmful bacteria building up in the sinus cavity.

Some of the less common severe sinus infection symptoms are ear aches, dull aching of the jaw and teeth, sensitivity to light and blurred vision.

Sinus infections can be painful, causing the affected person much discomfort. Diagnosis of severe sinus infection symptoms aid with timely treatment and provide relief from the pain. A severe case of sinusitis may interfere with daily routine activities as symptoms may persist for a long period of time.

There are many over-the-counter drugs available for severe sinus infection symptoms. Some treatments can be prepared easily at home. These include inhaling mentholated steam or the steam from a hot water bath, warm compression of the face’s affected areas, keeping the upper part of the body elevated while sleeping. It must be kept in mind however, no scientific backing exists of the effects of these self-administered home treatments.

The symptoms of sinus infections and subsequent treatment may seem simple to understand and administer, but it must be kept in mind that a timely diagnosis of the matter is of the utmost importance to prevent possible fatal infections.
